Soft feed variety perfectly suited for distilling and bio-ethanol markets
Yield potential
Denman has delivered high treated yields across all areas of the UK and also has an excellent untreated yield.

Disease resistance
Denman has a good disease resistance profile, with excellent Septoria tritici and yellow rust resistance, and produces very high untreated yields. Denman is resistant to OWBM and WSBMV.

Fungicide use
Always consult your agronomist and adapt programmes to local conditions.
Getting the fungicide agronomy right is crucial to establishing a healthy crop and maintaining canopy during yield formation. Only two strobilurins can be applied in any one season. Knowing the end use for your crop and understanding your local environmental conditions will aid the decision of when to apply a strobilurinbased product.
- T0 - Only needed in extremely high pressure years or on early autumn-sown crops. Using Cherokee will provide very good control against brown rust. The use of a protectant mildewicide may be needed if powdery mildew is at significant levels
- T1 - T1 timing is key for protecting leaf 3 (up to 10% of the yield in wheat comes from leaf 3). A triazole and chlorothalonil mix will control Septoria tritici and protect against the development of other foliar diseases
- T2 - This is the most important fungicide timing as control of diseases on the flag leaf give considerable yield advantages (up to 65% of yield comes from the top 2 leaves). Strobilurins offer protection against late-season rust infections and increase yield through their ‘greening effect’. The addition of a triazole and or Bravo is crucial in eradicating and preventing the infection of Septoria tritici
- T3 - ‘Ear spray’ – targeting ear diseases helps prevent the degradation of grain quality. The ear spray also gives additional control of disease on the top two leaves
Core programme
- T0 - Cherokee 1.0 lt/ha (only if risk of brown rust is high)
- T1 - Bravo 1.0 lt/ha + triazole (three quarter rate)
- T2 - Amistar Opti 1.25 lt/ha + triazole (three quarter rate)
- T3 - Amistar 0.25 lt/ha + triazole (quarter rate)
Note: Amistar Opti is a co-formulation containing azoxystrobin and chlorothalonil (Bravo)
Agronomic information
Denman has medium straw height and is relatively early to mature.

Growth habit
Denman has an intermediate growth habit and a relatively slow development rate.
- Ear emergence occurs at a similar time to Oakley (medium / late)
- Denman is suitable for early drilling
Recommended sowing rates
Suggested seed rates per square metre are shown below, these should always be used in conjunction with thousand grain weight.
- Mid to late September ~ 220-250 seeds/m2
- Mid-October onwards ~ 275-350 seeds/m2
Denman is a medium to low-tillering variety.
Nitrogen application
Standard nitrogen input programme for a feed variety, typically not exceeding 180 kgs N/ha.
- 20% middle of March (GS25-29)
- 60% GS32
- 20% GS34-37 – ensures quality is maintained to cover all potential markets
These figures are for guidance purposes only. You must work with your agronomist when calculating nitrogen rates and timings, taking into consideration end market requirements and the fertility of the field. You should also work within any Defra guidelines / restrictions.
PGRs
Denman has straw strength similar to Alchemy.
The addition of Moddus to the PGR programme will increase root structure and further aid plant shortening.
Moddus may also be needed during tillering in low plant populations to help root stimulation and promote tiller numbers.
As a guide, apply chlormequat 1.25 lt/ha + Moddus 0.1 lt/ha at GS30 and GS32.
A follow-up PGR should be considered at GS34-37 for very lush and / or high yielding crops.
Grain quality
Denman is a soft feed variety with very good grain quality and market potential.
SWRI rated as positive for distilling.
- Very high alcohol yield
- Low nitrogen and viscosity levels
- Denman is an ideal variety for the expanding bio-ethanol and wheat refinery markets
- Denman does not have the 1B/1R translocation so is suitable for all feed markets
