Yield potential

Sequel has produced very good yields across all areas of the UK – whatever the soil type, drilling date or fertility response rate, demonstrating its outstanding flexibility to the grower.

Disease resistance

Sequel has a good disease resistance profile to all the major diseases: mildew, net blotch and Rhynchosporium along with BaYMV resistance, a crucial factor in certain areas of the country.

Fungicide use

Always consult your agronomist and adapt programmes to local conditions.

  • T0 - Needed if there are signs of early disease pressure.
  • T1 - The use of Bontima at T1 will provide clean, stress-free lower green leaves to build yield potential
  • T2 - Bontima at T2 gives outstanding protection against disease and leaf spotting for green leaf retention, securing yield potential and increasing quality by driving grain size and grain fill

Core programme

  • T0 - Unlikely to be needed, use morpholine if required
  • T1 - Bontima 1.6 lt/ha
  • T2 - Bontima 1.6 lt/ha

Agronomic information

Good all-round agronomics offer an easy and flexible variety to grow, with early maturity and tall, stiff straw – a requirement for many growers with livestock.

Growth habit

  • Autumn: Semi-prostrate
  • Spring: Medium / Slow
  • Tillering ability: Medium
  • Maturity: Medium/early

Drilling dates

  • Suitability for early drilling: Good
  • Optimum drilling date: Mid September to early October
  • Suitability for late drilling (December): Good (very vigorous)

Recommended sowing rate

Seed rates are dependent on soil conditions, rotation and the time of drilling: the more difficult the environment, the higher the seed rate must be to compensate for potential plant loss. The table below shows the suggested number of seeds per square metre that should be planted under good conditions.

Sequel sowing rate

This table should always be used in conjunction with the thousand grain weight of the seed to calculate the sowing rate.

Nitrogen application

Apply enough nitrogen to maximize yield potential. The quantity required will depend on soil reserves, but Syngenta Seeds recommends, as a general rule in a second cereal situation, 170 kg/ha N with a split dressing of 10% at the end of February, 50% mid-March and 40% during mid-April.

These figures are for guidance purposes only. You must work with your agronomist when calculating nitrogen rates and timings, taking into consideration end market requirements and the fertility of the field. You should also work within any Defra guidelines / restrictions.

PGRs

Sequel is regarded as a medium risk variety in terms of lodging, hence Syngenta Seeds recommend the use of PGRs at GS32. On very lush crops, or very fertile sites, a second PGR at GS37 may be required.

GS31-32 – Moddus 0.2 lt/ha + chlormequat 1.25 lt/ha at onset of stem extension.

GS37 – Moddus 0.3 lt/ha or ethephon + mepiquat chloride 1.0 lt/ha (in high risk situations).

Grain quality

Sequel is a six row feed variety with exceptional specific weight.

  • Specific weight: 69.5 kg/hl
  • Sieving % through 2.25mm: 3.7%
  • Sieving % through 2.5mm: 16.2%

Harvesting

It is always advisable to harvest the crop in the best possible condition.
