The highest yielding spring feed barley
Yield potential
Garner is the highest yielding spring feed barley on the HGCA Recommended List 2010.

Disease resistance
Garner has a maximum 9 rating for resistance to mildew. It has good all-round resistance to foliar disease and has delivered very high untreated yields.

Fungicide use
Always consult your agronomist and adapt programmes to local conditions.
Garner could be considered a low input variety but it would still benefit from a standard two-spray programme.
- T0 - Not normally required.
- T1 - Key application timing to protect the canopy during the plants’ main burst of growth.
- T2 - To ensure the crop is healthy at harvest, protecting the grain fill and green leaf areas, vital for maintaining grain quality. Strobilurins protect against foliar diseases and chlorothalonil has demonstrated excellent control of biotic and abiotic spotting.
Core fungicide programme
- T1 - Kayak + half rate epoxiconazole.
- T2 - Amistar Opti + half rate epoxiconazole.
Agronomic information
Garner is similar in height to Waggon and combines good lodging resistance with very good brackling resistance.

Straw yield
In 2009 a straw yield trial was conducted by Scottish Agronomy on behalf of Syngenta Seeds. The trial found that even with its medium straw height, Garner produces 0.69 t/ha more straw than Riviera and 0.21 t/ha more than Waggon.
Growth habit
- Early Spring: Semi-prostrate
- Tillering ability: Medium
- Maturity: Medium
Drilling dates
- Suitability for early drilling: Medium
- Suitability for late drilling (April): Good
- Optimum drilling date: March to early April (Scotland). Mid-February to mid-March (England)
Recommended sowing rate
Seed rates are dependent on soil conditions at the time of drilling. The more difficult the environment the higher the seed rate must be to compensate for potential plant loss. The table below shows the suggested number of seeds per square metre that should be planted under good conditions. These figure should always be used in conjunction with the thousand grain weight of the seed.
Nitrogen application
When growing spring feed barley crops it is important to have high nutrient supply. Seedbed applications are not so important for feed varieties and therefore nitrogen could be applied as a 50:50 split dose: when tramlines become visible and then 14 to 21 days later (GS15-21).
These figures are for guidance purposes only. You must work with your agronomist when calculating nitrogen rates and timings, taking into consideration end market requirements and the fertility of the field. You should also work within any Defra guidelines / restrictions.
PGRs
Garner is a stiff-strawed variety so PGRs would not normally be required. However Syngenta Seeds advises the use of Moddus on lush crops or very fertile sites. Apply 0.1–0.2 lt/ha at GS 29-30 to stabilise tillers and promote root development.
Quality
Garner is the top yielding spring feed barley and has low screenings.

On the 1-9 scales high figures indicate that a variety shows the character to a high degree (e.g. high resistance).
