UK approval for Bontima® – the first fungicide containing IZM
26 March 2010
Syngenta Crop Protection UK Ltd has announced the approval of the first product containing its major new fungicide IZM (isopyrazam) in the UK – a co-formulation of IZM with cyprodinil called Bontima for use in winter and spring barley.
This follows receipt of official approval from the Chemicals Regulation Directorate, says Syngenta Crop Protection UK cereal fungicide manager, Rod Burke.
It marks the first approval for isopyrazam – the first molecule from the class of benz-pyrazole next generation fungicides – anywhere in the world, he confirms.
“As a formulated mixture of isopyrazam and cyprodinil, Bontima is a fungicide developed specifically for barley,” says Mr Burke, “and approval represents an important introduction for UK farmers, just ahead of key fungicide spray timings. It means farmers will be able to use Bontima in their winter and spring barley crops this year. Reliable control of all the major barley diseases with one product is now a reality. Both Syngenta and independent trials have demonstrated that Bontima delivers consistently high yields and quality.”
Syngenta continues to develop IZM – which has been shown to give outstanding performance against a wide range of diseases in many crops – and anticipates the UK Bontima launch will be followed by other launches of isopyrazam products around the world.
In the next 12 months, further introductions are planned in the Asia Pacific region, Latin America, Europe and other markets in crops including cereals, vegetables and fruit.
Approval for a wheat product containing IZM in the UK is hoped for in time for the 2011 season, says Mr Burke, subject to CRD approval and a MRL (maximum residue level) being set by the regulatory body.
Syngenta is planning a full UK launch of Bontima shortly.
